Enid’s Daigen Gibbens – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by NBC Bank

By Derrick Smith

Athletes at all levels of competition have numerous people that help them or influence them at some point along their journey. While the amount of the influence may differ, Daigen Gibbens says that he has had a couple of people that have helped him over the years.

“The biggest role model for me has been my mom,” he said. “She is a hard worker and has helped me understand the importance of always giving your best. Another person that has made a big impact on me is coach Holland. He has taught me that if you put in one hundred percent in everything you do, then you will be successful. I am thankful for both of them and I know that I would not be where I am or the person I am today without them.”

Gibbens is a senior at Enid High School. He is a member of the wrestling team and wrestles in the 170-pound weight class. Daigen has been wrestling for about six years and still loves the competition that the sport provides. Along with wrestling, he is also a member of the school’s football team.

During his career, Gibbens has had to do a lot of work to help get him to where he is today.

“There is a lot that goes into being a successful wrestler,” he said. “I have done a lot of hard drills and also pushed myself to points that I did not even think were possible. But I know that the work will pay off one day.”

Holland, who is the head coach of the Enid wrestling team, says Gibbens is a solid example of hard work.

“Daigen is a great kid and a hard worker,” the coach said. “He knows what it takes and puts the work in. He was a 2020 state qualifier and a three-time letterman. This year should be a good one for him too.”

The most memorable moment of Daigen’s career was a personal milestone.

“Being a state qualifier my sophomore season was a really great accomplishment for me,” he said. “Seeing my work pay off gave me even more confidence and helped me to work harder.”
