9 Questions with Enid’s Garrett Shull Presented by Dan Snyder – Shelter Insurance

VYPE: What year are you, what sports do you play, and what other activities are you involved with?

Garrett Shull: I am a senior at Enid High School. I play baseball. I also volunteer at Special Olympic events in Enid.

VYPE: What positions do you play?

GS: I play center field and third base.

VYPE: How did you start playing baseball? How old were you?

GS: I’ve been playing baseball ever since I could pick up a bat. I started hitting balls with a plastic bat in the background yard when I was 3.

VYPE: Did your parents play sports?

GS: They both play high school sports. My dad played football and my mom played volleyball.

VYPE: How have your parents supported your athletic career?

GS: I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents. My dad has always been my hitting coach. We have analyzed every part of my game together since I was little. Anytime I have something that needs to be worked on we talk about it and come up with a solution. My mom is all I could ever ask for. She’s my personal nutritionist and keeps me performing at my best both mentally and physically. She is always there for me whenever I’m in need.

VYPE: How important is nutrition for an athlete?

GS: Nutrition is the most important part of preparation. It is important to have the proper fuel before a workout or game to maximize performance.

VYPE: What does family mean to you?

GS: Family is everything for me. They have been there for me my whole life and have help me with anything I ever need. We are always there for each other.

VYPE: When did you start volunteering with Special Olympics?

GS: I’ve been a volunteer for around 10 years. My little brother, Braden, has cerebral palsy and is a part of miracle league and Special Olympics. I have been his partner every time and have made unforgettable memories with him.

VYPE: Who’s your favorite athlete and why?

GS: I don’t know that I’ve ever really had a favorite athlete. I enjoy watching all kinds of sports but I don’t have anyone that has always stood out to me.

VYPE: What are your future plans?

GS: I plan to play baseball at Oklahoma State while majoring in kinesiology and exercise science.
