Austin Kalow is a freshman at Enid High School. He participates in golf and NHS. Austin began playing golf because of his father. After he saw all of the cool opportunities and things that his father did, he wanted to see where it would take him. He started playing when he was only three years old, but began golfing competitively in the sixth grade.

Austin’s biggest role model is his step-dad. “He has helped me get better mentally for life and golf, he always holds me accountable, and has had great achievements,” Austin says. His biggest positive impact is God. Austin says that growing closer to God has helped him mentally and physically, and he’s been able to put his trust in Him.

Austin’s favorite subject in school is English, because he loves reading and writing, and improving his intellectual level. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Ruder, because he can always ask for help or have an ear to listen. After high school, Austin plans to pursue a career in golf. For fun, Austin likes to hang out with his friends and workout.

Austin’s favorite sports moment was going to Arizona and playing his first round out of state in a tournament in between his freshman and sophomore years. His highest achievement so far, has been qualifying for state as a freshman and getting third in conference. He’s also been recognized multiple years for his straight A’s in school.

Sports have taught Austin to never give up, and that life, like golf, has its ups and downs. To Austin, being a great athlete means having dedication and self discipline to do the things that nobody else wants to do. His favorite things about golf are the connections and friends that he’s able to make along the way. When things get tough, his father and friends push him to stay motivated. His advice to other athletes is not to give up. “It’s how you handle the slumps that makes you a better athlete and person,” Austin says.
