It takes a lot of work and dedication to be a successful athlete. But in order to reach their goals athletically, high school students must first be good students in the classroom. Paityn Abernathy knows that, while she loves to play sports, she is there for an education first.

“I take academics very seriously,” she said. “And I know that school has to come first in order to be a successful student athlete and leader. I’ve had some late night homework and early morning workouts but it’s all about maximizing the time I have to be able to do it all.”

Paityn is a sophomore at Enid High School, where she is a part of the golf and softball teams. Outside of sports, she is also a member of the choir, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Leadership Team, the National Honor Society, the Student Council, and the Principles Advisory.

Throughout her life, there have been many people that have made an impact on her life and helped Abernathy become the person she is today.

“My mom and my dad inspire me everyday to be the best that I can be and work hard to allow me to pursue the things that I love,” she said. “A teacher that had an influence on my life would be my middle school weight training coach, Mr. Cumpston. He taught me to believe in myself and that I could achieve anything I put my mind to. He really taught me to prioritize my health and exercise  to be successful in whatever I do. Lastly, Stella Stanley, who graduated last year, has had the biggest impact on me as a teammate in terms of hard work, effort, and kindness.  She really helped me stay focused in golf and to always put in the work.”

Being a member of numerous groups and activities, Paityn has made a lot of memories over the years.

“My favorite moment throughout high school so far has been making new connections within FCA and finding life long friends that share in our love for Christ,” she stated.
