Marley Smith from Enid is starting her high school volleyball career as a middle blocker. Although Smith is only a freshman, she has found success on the court. For Smith, keeping a positive mindset, working hard, and staying humble have been keys to helping her find success in the sport. Keeping a positive mindset can be difficult in sports, but Smith has found ways to help her stay positive.

“Mistakes happen. You need to shake it off and reset your mind,” she shared with VYPE.

Putting in the hard work by staying disciplined and dedicated to volleyball has also helped Smith to improve her skills, and in turn, creates a more positive mindset.

Part of the success for Smith comes from the role models in her life.

“My mom is my role model because she has always supported me and has made so many sacrifices for me just so I can do the stuff I love. She has always been there, showing me I can achieve anything with hard work. She pushes me to be my best and says no matter what, I can always improve and get better,” Smith shared.

Credit for her success is also given to God. Reflecting on specific times in her life when Smith was exhausted and wanted to give up, she stated, “God was and is always there guiding me to success.”

Smith shared that the highlight of volleyball so far is building friendships with the other high school players.

“I love watching everyone improve and getting closer,” Smith shared, grateful for her time with her teammates.

In addition to great teammates, Smith has shared how coaches along her volleyball journey have left a big impact on her life. Coach Nelson and Coach Littlejohn were Smith’s first volleyball coaches.

“They both helped build my confidence, my skills, and sportsmanship. If they never pushed me to do volleyball, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Smith.

In addition to volleyball, Smith stays active with Enid’s StuCo. Right now, Smith is enjoying her high school years, but she is looking towards the future. After Smith graduates from high school, she would like to attend college and pursue a degree in a healthcare field.

Marley Smith is someone the Enid community can be proud to stand behind. Smith shared what playing for Enid High School means to her.

“What it means to me when representing my school and community when I play is being a role model, showing integrity, and knowing how lucky and a privilege it is to be able to play a sport and always have good sportsmanship.”
