The bright lights, packed stands and fast pace of competition are familiar territory for Enid High School junior Sophia Alatorre. As a base on the cheer team, Alatorre embraces the responsibility that comes with supporting her teammates, both physically during routines and emotionally throughout the season.
One of her favorite experiences has been reaching the state competition alongside the people who have shared the work, practices and pressure with her.
“A memory I am most proud of is making state with my teammates.”
For Alatorre, cheer is much more than performance. It has become a setting where she has developed accountability, leadership and an appreciation for the value of a united team.
“Cheer has taught and helped me become a better person by learning to be a leader to others when needed!,It taught me how to take accountability for any of my wrongs & that teamwork goes a long way.”
That growth is strengthened by the encouragement around her. Alatorre credits her cheer coach as the teacher who has made the biggest difference, recognizing the push to improve on and off the mat. She also looks to her mother as an example of perseverance during difficult moments.
“My mom inspires me and proves that I can get through any tough battles I come across.”
Within the team, Alatorre appreciates teammates who keep the group connected through adversity. She points to Keeley as someone whose attitude can change the atmosphere, especially when the team faces a difficult day or challenging routine.
“A teammate that has left the biggest impression on me is Keeley. She is always so positive and supportive even when things aren’t going the best, she knows how to be so positive and there for others!”
Alatorre carries with her an encouraging piece of advice: “The silent battles you’re going through have a happy ending.”
She also recognizes the unwavering support provided by her family.
“I’d like to give thanks to my parents for always showing up & being so supportive at every cheer event I’ve had. Shout out to them for learning how the cheer world works!”
As she continues her junior year, Alatorre remains focused on helping build a positive, accountable culture while doing her part to lift those around her. Her state appearance came as part of Enid’s qualifying cheer group, a milestone she values because it was achieved together.
